Afton Star Night

The event was held at Afton Forest Preserve south of DeKalb.  Northwest Suburban Astronomers presented a fantastic program featuring several very high tech telescopes that allowed Scouts to see solar surface activity plus the planets of Venus and Saturn with its rings and much more.  In thedarkness of night, Scouts enjoyed using glow sticks under a star filled sky.

May 12, 2012 - Stamp Out Hunger

STAMP OUT HUNGER

MAY 12, 2012

Stamp Out Hunger is the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) annual food drive that locally supports Salvation Army Food Pantry. On Saturday May 12th, letter carriers collected food at homes while delivering the mail. It was the largest single day food pick up drive in DeKalb.

Troop 33 Scouts helped with the project by oganizing and sorting the food at the Salvation Army. We began with the incorrect times starting at 10:00 a.m. and planning to work until 1:00 p.m.  The postal carriers don't end their routes until 3:00-4:00 p.m. Scouts stayed the addtional hours to help make this worthy cause a successful event.  They completed a hard day of work to benefit needy families in our area.

THE WRITER'S YARN - AUTHOR'S FAIR

MAY 12, 2012

DeKalb Public Library is had a special event, "The Writer's Yarn", a local author's fair. Twelve authors were featured with book signing booths and special presentations. Troop 33 provided a food booth concession where people could purchase food during the event.

Most of the event was held inside the library due to threatening weather.  Troop 33's food booth was outdoors in the patio portion where hungry patrons could enjoy their food at nearby patio tables.  The weather remained stable with a few sprinkles now and then.

May 5, 11, 12,13,20, 2012 - Jacob McArtor Eagle Project

JAKE MCARTOR EAGLE PROJECT

May 5, 11,12,13, 20, 2012

The Malta Public Library is the site for Jacob McArtor's Eagle Project.  Since the library became handicapped accessible after a major building addition, an update to the landscaping and removal of an aging wooden access ramp was required.  Scouts dismantled parts of the ramp and completely removed it.  Large bushes designed to hide the ramp were removed providing better visual exposure to the front of the building.  New plantings will create a nicer presentation of the library landscape.  All the aspects of Jacob's project will be completed in advance of a public service planned for Memorial Day 2012.  A large number of boys were recruited for the project and provided a strong effort.

Our kitchen crew consisted of energetic Scouts and hard working adults.  They did an excellent job which was praised through kind words and many compliments.

April 29, 2012 - Pedal and Paddle Adventure

PEDAL & PADDLE ADVENTURE

APRIL 29, 2012

It was a two-part adventure on Sunday morning.

The first part was a 25-mile bike ride south to Shabbona Lake State Park.  There was some wind out of the east which created a cross-wind for much of the trip.  The wind was great for the few stretches of travel west where we rode with the wind.  It was a flat route with little traffic.  The giant 400 ft windmills they passed added to the adventure.  Scouts made excellent time as they rode a constant pace.

Everyone enjoyed their sack lunch in the quiet windless comfort of Pokanoka's Restaurant located along Lake Shabbona.

The second part of the trip involved canoeing. The wind had picked up substantially during lunch.  Most canoes were launched and in the lake before we aborted the canoe portion.  With high winds on the lake it too difficult to paddle.  Some of our Scouts were first-time paddlers.  For safety reasons the canoeing part of the adventure was aborted.

Our pancake breakfast was well attended and we received many excellent comments about the food and staff.  The Scouts earned some money to help pay for future activities.  Thanks extended to all the boy who sold tickets and worked at the event and for all the parents who helped.
